Lighting Upgrades

Often people redecorate their houses and want to upgrade light switches and power sockets; so they did out a screwdriver and set to changing the item to be met by:

There are two problems we now face:

OK so we have a mass of wires with similiar colours! Where to start?

The other problem is not as obvious: The depth of the metal back box!  In this case the metal back box that is present in the wall is too small to allow for the switch mechanism so needs to be removed and replaced with a deeper back box because often people would like to fit screw less switches which are flush with the wall.

In some circumstances this is easy due to the light switch being fitted in a stud wall with a plastic back box which just requires popping out and changing; but in others (such as in the picture above) requires the careful removal of the smaller back box, chasing out and a larger back box being fitted around the existing wires with the decoration being made good afterwards.

I also know of many people who have removed a lighting rose from the ceiling in their house and not isolated the power beforehand only for a short to occur and trip the electricity supply! Many do not appreciate the extreme danger to life by this dangerous practice!!

You are always better to consult a professional qualified electrician for help than to attempt works like this yourself.
